People from throughout the world wanted to be part of a DeKalb school club’s new project — including the president of the United States.
Stone Mountain High School’s International Club recently published its first cookbook complete with recipes from 17 countries. Proceeds from the book, titled “The World’s Kitchen Cookbook,” will go to the club for its charitable and educational work.
Recipes in the book include one from President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, said club sponsor Lisa “Fatimah” Armorer.
Ms. Armorer, a world language teacher at the school since 2005, said she sought a different way to raise funds from such traditional methods as candy or magazine sales. The varied backgrounds of club members gave her the idea of recording members’ family experiences in a book.
“I’m very big on documentation,” Ms. Armorer said.
The project evolved into a cookbook featuring brief stories and a number of recipes from elder members of families of club members — allowing them to record the stories and recipes for posterity’s sake.
She noted her late grandfather was a very good cook and had stories to tell — but all is gone because no one recorded it.
“It’s good to have something that can have longevity,” she said. “It’s not just about you.”
Music, movies and food are among the things that can give people a sense of what a different country — or region of your own country — is like. Many students have never been outside the South, Ms. Armorer said.
The Obamas contributed a recipe after Ms. Armorer was persistent in requesting it over the course of a month, she said.
Countries represented in the book include the U.S., Bosnia, Spain, Eritrea, Trinidad, Virgin Islands, Djibouti, Mexico, Vietnam, Nigeria, Cambodia, Ivory Coast, India, Ethiopia, Sudan, Jamaica and Panama.
The 172-page, soft-covered book was published by Gateway Publishing Co. Ltd. of Winnipeg, Canada. The price is $15 apiece.
